METS, ROX SWAP SLOW STARTERS

The Colorado Rockies acquired infielder Kazuo Matsui and cash from the New York Mets for outfielder/catcher Eli Marrero.

What does it give the Colorado Rockies
The Rockies lack a long-term option at second base, having received some surprising production from utility man Jamey Carroll of late. Matsui could fill that slot, but it is a gamble considering his great past in Japan but deeply disappointing two-plus years with the Mets. For now they'll send him to the minors in nearby Colorado Springs, where they can see if the thin air will spark his bat any. If it does, the Rockies have made a very good deal. The cash, about $4.5 million, eases the gamble a bit for the Rox if Matsui doesn't pan out and helps pay his hefty salary.

What does it give the New York Mets
Marrero was surprisingly inconsistent over the first couple of months of his first season with the Rockies, but he's normally a very reliable super-sub. The veteran right-handed hitter can do a little bit of everything, both on offense and defense, where he gives the Mets a third catcher and a player who can start if needed at just about any other position.
