MONTERO MOVED TO THE BRAVES

The Atlanta Braves acquired pitcher Rafael Montero and cash from the Houston Astros for a player to be named later.

What does it give the Atlanta Braves
The Braves were lacking bullpen depth, so they will take a chance on Montero. The veteran right-hander has struggled the past two seasons, allowing far too many baserunners. His K/9 also fell dramatically in 2024. Despite the decline, he has been a durable relief option. Perhaps Montero can bounce back after the change of scenery, but he could also be running out of MLB opportunities.

What does it give the Houston Astros
Montero had been with the Astros for five seasons, but they will move on as he became increasingly ineffective. They also sent some cash to Atlanta to cover most of the veteran reliever's contract, which gave him a bit of trade value. For the Astros, the trade for a younger player to be named later (Patrick Halligan) is a decent move.

Fantasy impact
Montero saw some use in high-leverage situations for the Astros in recent seasons, but that is unlikely to continue with the Braves. The right-hander will need to re-establish himself and will likely do so in middle relief. That will keep him off the fantasy radar.
