What does it give the Athletics
In Newcomb, the Athletics add a depth left-handed pitcher. He can work as a long reliever or starter, which gives him some versatility. Newcomb also had a decent 3.95 ERA in 41 IP this season in Boston, but his 1.76 WHIP is a cause for concern. In any case, he'll return for another stint with the A's pitching staff, which has been struggling.
