ALCALA SENT TO THE RED SOX
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Jorge Alcala from the Minnesota Twins for infielder Andy Lugo.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
In Alcala, the Red Sox bring in a reliever who's having a down year. The 29-year-old right-hander was very impressive in 2024 (3.24 ERA, 1.04 WHIP), but this season has been a disaster for him. A change of scenery could help, and Boston needs bullpen depth. Alcala may not have a long leash, though, with an 8.88 ERA in 24.1 IP on the year.
What does it give the Minnesota Twins
Alcala was really struggling, so the Twins will move on and add to their prospect pool. Lugo is a speedy infielder signed as an international free agent by the Red Sox in 2021. He's still just 21 years old but moved up to High Single-A ball this year. He doesn't have much power but can get on base and steals bases. Lugo will continue developing with Minnesota.
Fantasy impact
This trade won't have a fantasy impact. Alcala hasn't been a trustworthy bullpen option this season, so he is not pitching in high-leverage situations.
