McMAHON MOVED TO THE YANKEES
The New York Yankees acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies for pitchers Josh Grosz and Griffin Herring.
What does it give the New York Yankees
In McMahon, the Yankees bring in a solid starting third baseman. The 30-year-old is usually good for 20-plus home runs and can hit in the middle of the order. A lefty hitter, he could also thrive playing home game at Yankee Stadium. He is a skilled defender, too, and his arrival should keep Jazz Chisholm Jr. in his natural position at second base. McMahon is signed through 2027, so this trade gives New York some much-needed stability.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
McMahon, a 2013 draft pick by Colorado, is finally on the move after several seasons of trade rumors. For the Rockies, pitching has been a major struggle, and they were able to get two decent prospects here. Herring, a left-handed starter, was one of New York's better young pitchers, while Grosz is also a starter but a right-hander. The Rockies are a ways away from being competitive, so these pick-ups will give their pitching some added potential in seasons to come.
Fantasy impact
McMahon probably loses some fantasy value after this trade. He will likely hit lower in the Yankees order and may no longer start against left-handed pitchers. He always had better splits playing home games at Coors Field, too. As for the Rockies prospects, they are still early in their development, but Herring especially could be worth keeping an eye on in coming seasons.
