JANSEN JOINS THE BREWERS
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired catcher Danny Jansen and cash from the Tampa Bay Rays for infielder Jadher Areinamo.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers upgrade their catching depth with the addition of Jansen. The veteran will be the new backup, as Eric Haase was designated for assignment following this trade. Jansen should also see playing time when starter William Contreras serves as the designated hitter. He was hitting just .204 but had 11 HR and a solid BB% with the Rays this year.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays traded for catcher Nick Fortes in a separate transaction, so they appear to have valued a better defender behind the plate than Jansen. Tampa Bay also added to its prospect pool here. Areinamo is a 21-year-old infielder who has posted promising hitting and base-stealing numbers at High Single-A Ball. He will look to take next steps in his new organization.
Fantasy impact
Jansen will likely see less playing time after this trade, which will hurt his already limited fantasy value. He could still provide some home runs and walks, but there should be better options. As for Areinamo, he could be worth keeping an eye on, but he is at least a few seasons away from an MLB call-up.
