BEDNAR BROUGHT IN BY THE YANKEES
The New York Yankees acquired pitcher David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates for catcher Rafael Flores and outfielders Brian Sanchez and Edgleen Perez.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees strengthen their bullpen depth with the addition of Bednar. After a rough 2024 season, the Pirates closer rebounded nicely this year. He had a 2.37 ERA and 17 saves with Pittsburgh. The veteran should be in the late-inning mix in New York's bullpen, and could challenge for the closer job if Devin Williams struggles.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
As the Pirates continue to struggle on offense, this trade will add three young hitters to their organization. Flores was New York's top catching prospect and is a promising power-hitter. Perez has good potential as well and is just 19 years old. While Sanchez is a lower ranking outfield prospect.
Fantasy impact
Bednar should get a boost from this trade. Even if he does not become the Yankees closer, he will get more late-inning work than he was seeing with the last-place Pirates. His strikeout ability makes him a valuable reliever in many formats, too, whether he is earning holds or saves in New York. Out of the Pirates prospects, Flores could be worth watching as he gets closer to the big leagues. He has the tools to be an interesting fantasy catcher.
