The Padres may have needed a spot on the 40-man roster here, which explains acquiring a pitcher currently on the 60-day IL. Cortes might be ready to pitch some time later this month, so he is a good gamble for San Diego.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
Clearly, the Brewers were ready to move on from Cortes–choosing against waiting for his return later this season. Milwaukee feels comfortable with the state of the starting rotation, so they took back minor-league outfielder Lockridge.
Fantasy impact
Cortes might not be a fantasy-relevant pitcher until 2026, since his return to action this season is largely up in the air. As for Lockridge, he is mostly a depth outfielder at this point.
