RED SOX LAND BRIAN ANDERSON
The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder Brian Anderson from the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Mark Kotsay.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox plugged Kotsay into their first base spot for a while this season but he was not their long-term answer, and with the recent acquisitions of Adam LaRoche and Chris Duncan, he was expendable. They obviously believe the talented-but-inconsistent Anderson (who was a first-round draft pick back in 2003) still has the potential to eventually pan out. That said, he has already been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
Kotsay is a clutch veteran who has ice in his veins when it comes to pinch-hitting duties, and his versatility brings that much more value to a somewhat injury-prone Sox offense. He isn't likely to start, but adds quality depth and the cash is a nice bonus for the ChiSox. Anderson wasn't really panning out after several years in their system.
