SURTAIN HEADS TO KC

The Kansas City Chiefs acquired cornerback Patrick Surtain and a fifth-round draft pick in 2005 from the Miami Dolphins for a second-round draft pick in 2005 and a fifth-round draft pick in 2005.

What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
Finally, a premier player to help lead the Chiefs' defense back to respectability. At 28 Surtain is in his prime and is unquestionably one of the NFL's elite cornerbacks. Surtain gets a new seven-year, $50.8 Million deal as part of the package, so he'll be happy in Kansas City (which he wasn't in Miami). This was the K.C.'s most critical acquisition of the off-season, as the Chiefs' secondary was simply the worst in the NFL in 2004. They yielded a league-worst 278.3 receiving yards per game and the second-most receiving scores (32). Surtain's 25 interceptions the past three seasons are the NFL's most, so he immediately gives the secondary much-needed elite ability and credibility.

What does it give the Minnesota Twins
A solution to the ongoing Surtain soap opera and a solid draft pick. There was talk of finding a way to keep Surtain around because of his skill level, but the cornerback ultimately wanted out and got his wish. Losing him is a step back for the Miami secondary, and they also fall back in the fifth round of the draft as part of the deal from 138th to 162nd. But Miami should be able to compensate a little with the second-rounder, which is the draft's 46th selection. Along with the seconnd overall pick it gives the 'Fins two quality players to bolster their future.
