YANKS GET TWO FOR ONE

The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Paul Quantrill from the New York Yankees for pitchers Darrell May and Tim Redding, and cash.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres already have the second-best bullpen, in terms of ERA, in the National League, and Quantrill gives them added depth. The veteran righty has had his struggles this year in the Bronx but it's reasonable to assume he's not quite finished pitching quality innings. Plus, he gained a little postseason experience last year, which might come in handy in San Diego this year.

What does it give the New York Yankees
May and Redding both give the Yanks something they've been lacking all season: starting depth. Sure, they've had some starters with strong track records in the rotation, but they've gotten burned when they've struggled or got injured. May can either start or, as a southpaw, be used to retire left-handed hitters out of the bullpen, replacing the recently cut Mike Stanton. Redding is a 27-year-old starter who has struggled the past two seasons but still has plenty of potential. He can start or pitch middle relief for the Yanks. The latter is his most likely starting point, possibly taking over Quantrill's old role. Overall, the Yanks appear to have made a sweet deal here, getting two pitchers for one who they'd already designated for assignment.
