BUNTING FOR NOVAK, SCHENN
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Tommy Novak and defenseman Luke Schenn from the Nashville Predators for winger Michael Bunting and a fourth-round draft pick in 2026.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins are active two days before the deadline. Adding Novak makes some sense for a team that has a serious lack of depth at the center position behind veteran superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Novak can also play wing, which adds to his value. As for Schenn, he replaces Vincent Desharnais (recently traded) on the roster. However, will he stay with Pittsburgh or be traded again before the deadline?
What does it give the Nashville Predators
The Predators are clearly looking to dump some players before this year's deadline, so it makes sense that they started with the disappointing Novak. Schenn was a likely candidate to be moved, but did the Predators get enough in return? Bunting is currently on injured reserve (appendectomy) and is more of a role player than impact forward. The Preds did secure a fourth-rounder in '26, as well. This deal is somewhat surprising.
Fantasy impact
Novak has an opportunity to earn more playing time in Pittsburgh, since he was really struggling in Tennessee. He might be worth keeping an eye on down the stretch. Bunting is currently injured, and losing Malkin as his center could hurt his fantasy value. It might be time to cut bait with Bunting. Schenn has no fantasy value, so move it along.
