SODERSTROM SENT TO BOSTON
The Boston Bruins acquired defenseman Victor Soderstrom from the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Ryan Mast and a seventh-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 197 overall).
What does it give the Boston Bruins
In Soderstrom, the Bruins get an offensive defenseman with prior NHL experience. He decided to leave North America to play in the SHL last season and posted very good numbers for Brynas IF. Can Boston convince Soderstrom to give the NHL another try? If yes, he might surprise.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
For the Blackhawks, this move is essentially waving the white flag on Soderstrom. They were unlikely to be able to re-sign the restricted free agent. Therefore, they instead get a serviceable right-shooting defenseman in Mast, who will likely toil in the AHL due to Chicago's plethora of D prospects.
Fantasy impact
Keep an eye on Soderstrom. He has the offensive chops to break out (finally) this season. However, he must first agree to terms with Boston and officially decide to return to North America. He may be worth a very late-round flier in 2025. As for Mast, he is mostly a depth defenseman.
