MACCELLI TO TORONTO
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired left-winger Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth for a conditional third-round draft pick in 2027.
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
In Maccelli, Toronto adds an offensive winger coming off a down year. He broke out with 57 points in the 2023-24 season, but declined to 18 last year and was a frequent scratch. The Maple Leafs could use scoring depth on the wing, so Maccelli will have a chance to bounce back there. The 24-year-old still has upside. He needs to be more consistent.
What does it give the Utah Mammoth
Maccelli was no longer a great fit in Utah after their recent addition of JJ Peterka. The Mammoth are not getting a lot in return here, which is disappointing after Maccelli showed good promise for several seasons. But they will move on with a draft pick (a conditional third-rounder in 2027) and clear $3.43 million in cap space.
Fantasy impact
Maccelli should benefit from this trade. He will need to earn ice time in Toronto, but his potential as a middle-six winger on a high-scoring team could make him a sleeper pick this season. Still, he does come with some risk.
