Was a polished, well-rounded passer with character, smarts and leadership qualities. Had a good arm and the ability to make deep throws, mid-range passes with touch and short routes on the run. Was fairly athletic, with good scrambling instincts and the speed to make plays with his feet. Struggled at times against aggressive and talented opponents, which messed up his timing on his progressions and reads. His size was only average for an NFL quarterback, so durability was an issue for him. His NHL career ended abruptly due to shoulder and rotator cuff issues that were degenerative.
