The Texans are slated to sign Rankins (illness) to a one-year, $7 million contract, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
Rankins (shoulder) is officially active for Saturday's wild-card matchup with the Browns.
A powerhouse on the defensive line and a regular threat for bull-rush sacks. Capable of playing several different D-line positions well, thanks to his mix of superior strength and excellent awareness. Aggressive and explosive off the snap, drawing double teams and collapsing the pocket as he goes. Stuffs the run, will disrupt passing lanes, and will even pick passes off. Not very fast in space and can get a bit flat-footed when plays break down. Somewhat undersized for the inside of the D-line in terms of height and mass, and doesn't have top foot-speed for pass-rushing off the edge (nor huge hands to help with getting off edge blocks).
