Head coach Spencer Carbery said Wednesday that Thompson is slated to start Thursday's Game 5 at home against the Hurricanes, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Thompson stopped 32 of 36 shots Monday in the Capitals' 5-2 loss to the Hurricanes in Game 4 of their second-round series, with Carolina's final goal getting scored into an empty net.
Impressive showings in the ECHL and AHL earned the tall, right-catching goaltender an NHL opportunity. He generally plays at the top of his crease and is active in the net, not only with his skating and positioning but also with his hands, as well. His acrobatic style can look chaotic, but he gives off an air of calm on the ice.
